Apple Power Mac ads misleading?

I use G5’s at school and I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed they aren’t the fastest in all possible ways.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike G5’s and I don’t mind working on them but I just hate knowing that they’re not everything they claim to be.

The only thing that’s sort of deterred me from every investing in a Mac is the cost. But looking at all the great stuff Apple is coming out with I’m not sure if I trust them. I purchased a $300 ipod awhile back and it’s having battery issues. Makes me wonder if I should have invested in a different brand?

I’m not trying to start a pc vs mac thread. I’ll say it first, whether you have a mac or pc you can create and do some pretty amazing stuff and I think it’s your own personal preference what you use. I honestly don't think one's better than the other.

Just thought it was an interesting article that popped up in the news.

i saw this too, and one thing grabbed me:
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that the G5 was not the fastest computer "in all circumstances for all applications".

umm, duh. anytime a claim like that is made about ANY product its always under certain conditions, i'd think that was almost implied. if a car is marketed as "the fastest in the world" it may have the fastest 0-60 time or 0-100 time or top speed but probably not all three, ya know?

What advertising isn't misleading? Isn't that the point?

I’ve always thought of apple as the underdog that has to charge a lot for their products because they have to. More and more lately I’ve started to feel like it’s nothing “but” a deceiving marketing campaign.

I think advertising should persuade but shouldn’t deceive. The ipod ads were genius.

I'm really surprised that they're picking on Apple... as deker said, ALL advertising is misleading... it's the only way TO sell things...

Whatever. They'll just pay them the whatever fine that might be imposed and think of a new slogan for the G5.

Well...it's not suppose to be.

Advertising Ethics and Principles*

Truth
Advertising shall tell the truth, and shall reveal significant facts, the omission of which would mislead the public.
Substantiation
Advertising claims shall be substantiated by evidence in possession of the advertiser and advertising agency, prior to making such claims.

Comparisons
Advertising shall refrain from making false, misleading, or unsubstantiated statements or claims about a competitor or his/her products or services.

Bait Advertising
Advertising shall not offer products or services for sale unless such offer constitutes a bona fide effort to sell the advertising products or services and is not a device to switch consumers to other goods or services, usually higher priced.

Guarantees and Warranties
Advertising of guarantees and warranties shall be explicit, with sufficient information to apprise consumers of their principal terms and limitations or, when space or time restrictions preclude such disclosures, the advertisement should clearly reveal where the full text of the guarantee or warranty can be examined before purchase.

Price Claims
Advertising shall avoid price claims which are false or misleading, or saving claims which do not offer provable savings.

Testimonials
Advertising containing testimonials shall be limited to those of competent witnesses who are reflecting a real and honest opinion or experience.

Taste And Decency
Advertising shall be free of statements, illustrations or implications which are offensive to good taste or public decency.

Companies do that all the time though. "This truck is rated #1 in its Class" "This razor will change your life" blah blah blah.

I will say I was very disappointed at the Ipod deal when that happened. Have they corrected the problem, yes. Why... Because enough people bitched about it. Same goes for the iBooks with monitor and logic board issues. I just expected them to actually "be different" I guess. But it appears they are really not.

* still wants a shiny new dual 2.5 ghz liquid cooled G5 though *
