how do i CHMODD?

what is this?

i see it alot and have no idea how to do it

Are you using a *nix system or running your web space on a *nix system? It's setting permission levels. So if you wanted something with full write/read/execute permission across the board (anyone can do all 3 - this is the least strict permission) then you would:

[john@saveri]$ chmod 777 some_file.txt

for example. You wouldn't chmod 777 a file on the web - bad idea. But it just explains the command.

There are instances where you need to have a file "writeable", like if you upload phpBB forums, the config.php file has to be re-uploaded so the proper permissions will allow the config info to be written to the file.

it's much easier to modify the restrictions with your ftp program... in most of them you just right click on the file/directory that you want to modify, and click "edit permissions" or "change permissions" or whatever it says. Then there are usually checkboxes you can click to set the permissions. Or just type in the proper number.

chmodd always reminds me of the word chode. :D

Whenever I see it I pronounce it "k-mod" in my head. I'll probably make a fool of myself someday when I have to say it out loud.

Kinda like "wacom" - I don't know how to pronounce that... ?
