shoutbox/comments with out cgi?

I think that you need CGI to add shoutboxes and comments but I've never really heard how you make them. Is it CGI? Or can I make them with HTML/CSS/Javascript/DHTML? Also I'm looking to make a poll/type of thing for voting. This may not require CGI but I really don't know. Can someone explain all this?

Most require a server side script like PHP or ASP or PERL to function, yes. One of those should work on your server, just check to see what you have available. Then search www.hotscripts.com for the scripts.

Depends on your server some have php some have perl/cgi the server with cgi is more likely to be unix server which I dont have can install php but I just gave you a list of php scripts of shoutbox here

Just to make it clear(er),
to have a shoutbox or anything of that sort, the script has to be able to store the data somewhere for everyone to see the same stuff. And that has to be on a server, so there is no such thing as a Clientside shoutbox.

And what Nix gave you too needs a server side script support, but those are hosted on their server, I'm sure.
