Now I have been noticing most sites are setting their width's to the 640 is that still the best way to do it, or is 1024 getting more popular?? I am designing a site and I always do the width to 100% on the INITIAL table but now im seeing 640 everywhere specially this site also is doing 640... Any posts on this or if you guys know what the standard is right now appreciate any feedback... Thanks in advance! :D -mike |

640 is a bad idea imo. 800 is the least i work in for basics. |

i do mine at 780. you have to account for the vertical scroll bars. and of course, the ideal solution is to make it stretch to any resolution. so you could have it go down to 640, but then also stretch up to 1024 or any other resolution. |

800 x 600 wiill equate to about 744 x (doesnt really matter how long) with a scrollbar. Add 10 to the first figure if you dont have a scrollbar - (shockingly small is'nt it? lol)

Yes, by using percentages instead of set pixel widths for your tables or div tags. Try going to www.wired.com and then dragging the resize handles of your browser around to resize the page. You will see that it reformats itself in real time while you resize the browser. They use CSS for all the formatting on that site, which is why it reformats so nicely. You can do it with tables as well though. Just set everything as a percentage. You can also set certain columns to be a fixed width, like say the nav bar, and then set the width value of the content column to be "*" which uses the leftover space after it draws in the set width for the navbar column. |
