I see it more as biological illustration than a planetary one. Still very cool though.

All in all it is very good and it is a very good ide. But I think the planet is to unvirtuel! Maybe you like it like that?
And I think that the planet must have some life, like if you put is some texture or something, so it don't look all round. And a nother thing is that the shadow you are using on the planet don't look so cool, I would make it more soft, not so hard.
