First attempt at a "toon"

This is the first time I have attempted something of the sort. It is still a WIP but give me some C&C. Please ignore the shading and the flame as I was just trying out a few things. Any advice on additions or colors would be appreciated.

It is a good start. I think it is just too flat. Maybe adding some shadows under the overlapping pieces would help.
