just add a light to the other side or even a reflector just to make out the frontal detail while still staying pretty dark...You could use a piece of foil for a lighter/shiny reflector or a piece of plain paper for a more diffused sublte reflector...You could even use different colors of paper you can add a subtle color to the whole photo...

I think it was Rodder that has a sweet set up to photograph stuff. He has it all set up very nicely, you may want to talk to him for some tips.
