The background is very powerful. Perhaps you could tone it down a bit to bring more attention to the characters in the foreground. The Christ-figure is excellent, but why do the others look as if they swallowed footballs? Are they distorted as a kind of mutation, as they are imperfect? That sort of works, but if they were really cretins and low-lifes and sexual-obsessives you would want them crawling up from the bottom of the painting. If they are Angellic beings after all, then they need to be much more glorious than they are, and just as perfect as Christ. |
The Christ-figure is excellent, but why do the others look as if they swallowed footballs? Are they distorted as a kind of mutation, as they are imperfect?
Einstein is quoted as saying, ""The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science...." I'm not really sure in any specific way what I mean by this picture, but it is about caring and love. The form of the characters is a repeating shape that I use in my work... not sure why and not particularly interested in finding out why... I suspect it is a product of visual influences in my life from artists whose work I admire - Bacon, Bosch, Bruegal, Chagall, Nolde... and a bunch of others. I like doing them, so I do them... |

Einstein also said, "Look to the Heavens and learn." In listing all of your favorites and sources, that in a way is what you are doing. And I agree that the mysterious is indeed beautiful ! OK, I'll consider your piece as a statement, in some way, of the mysterious. Not too many people are ready to inject abstraction into realism that way, so it takes a little getting used to. Caring and Love, though, could be difficult with only the shapes of their bodies and their poses. You did such a good job with the coloration (excellent!) that some minute changes could look like Auras and how they would be blazing with pure passion! >>>>Color is emotion.<<<< Don't let me get carried away here. This is your painting, not mine. Just suggestions. |

It's taken awhile, but I believe I understand this picture better myself now. I've always known what it was about, but the literal meaning was struggling to get to the surface. A good deal of the inspiration for it came from reading a book several months ago - "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. The strength and maternity of women in early Christianity. If you haven't read it, I strongly recommend doing so. An exciting read and an extraordinary novel.

I wouldnt change a thing, the background doesnt overpower the figures and is in a complimentry colour scheme. The detail is evident in the closeups you provide and serve well to illustrate that the background is in harmony with the overall tone of the work. The figures themselves do remind me of Bosch, just with more flesh on the bones ;) Oh there is one change I would make - a 1280 x 1024 wallpaper version ;) |
