That damn desktop thread got me all excited.....so i figured id skin something. It's my first skin so I went the easy way and skinned my mp3 player. I wanted it as minimal as possible and orange (im in the middle of an orange phase right now *see avatar* ). Also i used yellow for the over state. Its really the only color that shows up on orange.....but i dont think it looks that bad. I may skin more later.....its kinda fun (though a lot of work to map out coordinates of buttons and stuff...) |

Is it winamp or something? You might want to give a little blur to that highlight - maybe a curve, too - like your sig. :D Very nice. Now skin the whole app!

I concur, the highlight is a touch too strong. It sort of blocks everything in a transparent sort of way. The colour is tight though. Looking sharp.

yeah orig. it had a curve, but i had to add the highlight to the text..(the text is a scrolling bitmap) so the curve kept breaking. I agree, the highlight isnt the best. I may take it out. Also I think i'll skin the playlist too. & the mp3 player is "cool player". (i hate winamp to no end :D ) |

Well as I said, I skinned the playlist too (which was about 80x more work than the actual player lol). After doin the list, instead of going the really shiny route.....i just went with a simpler orange/white gradient with a slight rounded highlight. Though im not sure that was the best choice....cause now its a little bit brighter than it was before making the yellow stand out less. Oh well......its a WIP i guess. Playlist & player Playlist stretched |

Pretty cool. And about the curve - you could curve at the beginning for like 10-20px and then straighten out so it looks OK for the text scroller. But just that highlight soften on your edit helps out a lot - very nice. Have you tried skinning the newest winamp? Theyve made it way too complicated - theres all sorts of coding and stuff that you need to know. A lot more than just art - I can tell you that. But I guess it allows for more flexibility with all the dynamic motion stuff and everything. So is skinning "cool player" just editing .gif files or something? Or can you place things and resize elements and stuff? |

thnx guys. Well u open PS, and draw whatever kind of mp3 player you could possibly want/think of. Then you save out a "normal" image (buttons not clicked) and then the pressed image (all buttons clicked) in bmp format. Then you write an .ini file that maps out the coordinates of each button u included in the skin. Thats basically it. Im not sure about winamp now...but back in the day when u skinned winamp....it still looked like winamp. The part I love about cool player....is it can look like anything. Its really 98% art... then coding 2% coding. |
