hey guys.. well, it's not my first time working with vectors, but i'm fairly new in Illustrator.. I've been avoiding the program for a long time because it drives me mad when it wont grap a certain point or whatever .. anyway, i finished a drawing of a girl (well, duuh) .. I'm thinking of making some sort of poster for my room .. anyway.. here you go of course i would like some hint's and tips .. but bear in mind that i will probably do a little more details and all before i finish the poster .. *** edit ... and yes, i avoided the eyes on purpose. I actually made some pretty decent one's while beeing bored at my school, but like the "anonymous-look" this gives |

looks exactly like something at designchappel, only....not on the same level. i think you did good for your first time in illustrator. the girl looks a bit deformed, hunchback and with a flat head. you might want to try making your shadows not so sharp and obvious. for me, illustrator is not the best tool for drawing stuff like this.

I like it very much. But I have some tips for you: *1: Why is the program called Illustrator?, Because you Illustrate, not remaking a photo. I had the same problem as you have, when I first began working in Illustrator, I wanted to creat things perfect and that can get you lost and can get things very ugly. Try not to to creat a photo, you already have that, try to only work with shapes and I personally think that you could loosen some colors, maybe only work in 1 or 2 colors, then you have a illustration and not a photo. And remember shapes, you donĀ“t have to have so much detail, as long as you got the shapes right it sort of brings the illustration in front. Why not work some more with the hair? Hope you found any of my tips usefull and good luck!. |

The hair is messed up and it looks like a dude except for the head. It's a chick with a man's body. And quit with that stupid black bar over the eyes sh*t. It's so annoying and overused. No one even bothers trying to learn how to draw eyes anymore. They just stick a bar over it and call it art. Learn how to draw eyes and don't use this cliche, overused, cheap, weasel way out of learning. <-------rant Other than that it looks cool.
*1: Why is the program called Illustrator?, Because you Illustrate, not remaking a photo.
The name has nothing to do with it. If you noticed most of the people here use Photoshop to make web layouts. Not to alter photos. And do you "weave dreams" with Dreamweaver? Do you learn about explosives with "Fireworks"? Is "Flash" just a porn app? The name is a non-issue. |

wow telemakhos - you're such an angry young man lol uhh - casual - I think the feature that is most disturbing is the chin. Women have more or less pointed chins...men are the squarish ones...in drawings anyway...there's some women I saw that could pass for Arnold... I think that if you will make her chin a bit more pointed (delicate is the word I'm looking for) you may end up with a handsome woman |

He means that you don't need to be photo realistic with Illustrator. What one does need to do is imply things through the illustration. Rather than trying to shade perfectly, getting every strand of hair, etc...he can just do this through various illustrating techniques. Don't treat the guy like an idiot, of course he knows you don't "weave dreams" etc...I remember you asking some pretty silly Illustrator questions. Casual - Looking good man. Try using some blends for the shadows and stuff. They can create some wonderful effects. A great alternative to gradients, although they are basically the same thing. |

Im pretty much at the same point as you in Illustrator, casual. I can use the pen tool fairly well, but when I get into Illustrator I dont understand any of the palletes or the workspace or the tools (they must be slightly different), but youve done a good job on this one. Work on the things that other people said - I noticed the hair and the fact that her face was kinda fat. Nice pose, though - she reminds me of someone I know from school. And did you say that you were keeping the black bar or that it was temporary? I know that eyes are really difficult, so ... good luck on that I guess. And telemahkos - he was just making a little joke to prove a point, and Im no whiz with Illustrator but it sounds like a valid point to me - thanks for the advice, biz_. |
