Backdrop would describe it best. Its a 19x24 piece of paper (bristol board) bent up to form a curve (seamless background).

haha that's great - looks like my studio I use cloth too sometimes - I just go into a cloth store and buy 1, 1.5 meters of nice velvet or satin when I happen nearby. The sales girls always look funny at me and say "The wife will be mad - you can't make anything out of that little material"

flash would indeed - off of satin - velvet is not shiny - in any case - studio pics don't use flashes - if you look at rodder's pic you will see indirect lighting from lamps....professional studios have bigger lights with shaders and lightboxes and diffusers... - hence - no glare...and no fugly amateur shadows
And anyhow - the reflexes from satin bounced light are sometimes good when you take photos of stuff made of uniform metal - it provides highlights....takes from the blandness .... and so on and so forth....

Learning how to take photos is a priority over mastering a camera (and no, I do not mean how to push buttons).
