Umm - I guess a wizard could light his staff but mine is a poor wizard - couldn't afford a staff - or some moisturizer for his hands :D - All he's got is that old lantern and a battered robe...

Did he ever think of doing magic tricks in town?

well - as you can see it's night and he's just arrived into town - in the morning he will try his luck on the market square - perhaps he'll make a few coins to buy some food and perhaps mend his robe...
He was once a mighty sorcerer but he lost a battle with a warlock from the Courts of Chaos and lost most of his powers...Eversince he was reduced to selling low grade love potions and amusing the crowds at fairs with cheap tricks any wizard apprentice would laugh at....

Might trying getting some nailclippers for him too.
