I selected the icon which I want to use for the email link and when I added the mailto:blah@hotmail.com text to the link url I just got a page error.

After I select what I want to be the email link, where do I stick the mailto:blah@hotmail.com?

It's weird, I've had success if I'm trying to do this with text but I'm having trouble with the icon.

Just click on the picture that you want to make a link, then down in the properties bar, you will see: "Link" followed by a text area. Just type the mailto:whatever@whatever.com into that box. That is all there is to it. Unless you want to add a subject, then use the code marble posted above.

Someone a while ago put spaces in the code examples:

and it worked!
