Barkground help please

Hi

Would anyone know how I could substitute the green carpet backgound on this picture with a black one? I have tried this and my botched attempt, which looks awful, can be seen at PiperBrian Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Or cut him out using a bezier pen tool, and make a path around him....or even better, a feature i've only noticed a few weeks ago, go to Image - > Extract and paint around the guy, making sure to paint over the edges or him. You just need his outline. When you've completed outlining him in green, use the fill tool and paint it blue (default) and press ok. This produces amazing results
