You would need to define a pattern and then apply the pattern to the image. To create the pattern, you would open a new photoshop document (if you want, you can do it in the window you're working in now), and depending on the size of the grids you want (let's say 4 sq. pixels per grid), you would make a 4x4 pixel box. Now change the canvas size to 3x3 so that only two adjacent sides of the box remains. Select what's remaining and go to Edit->Define Pattern->OK. Now go to the image you want to apply the pattern to. Select the Paintbucket tool and in the options, select Pattern instead of Foreground as the fill. Select your grid pattern and just fill a layer with the grid pattern. Now grab the Magic Wand tool, and set it to Tolerance: 0, Anti-aliased is unchecked, Contiguous is unchecked, and select the white area. Press delete, then deselect. You should now have a grid left over. Apply whatever you need to do to the grid to accomplish the final product.
