Because the menu bar/panel in the browser takes up space. As does the status bar on the buttom of the browserwindow This means that you donĀ“t really have 800 x 600 pixels to work with. It is difficult to give you an exact size to work with, as people have different browser settings. Some uses large icons in the browser panel - others are using small icons. Some have an additional Google bar under the usual browser panel. It all takes up space :( |

i know it's not 800x600, but you're saying that there is more than 120 pixels of menu in a regular internet browser? damn...didn't realize it was so small...thought it was in my coding

Lots of web developing people, myself included, suggest an image size of 760x420 if you want your web page to be fully visible in an 800x600 browser window. As has already been said, some of the screen gets taken up by the browser.

This might help you decide how much Real Estate you have to work with in a given browser under certain conditions... http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/99/41/index3a_page2.html?tw=design |
