Hi. I'm new.

I've been trying for a long time to come up with the perfect explosion. Ideally, I'd like to animate it in imageready, but a still is sufficient.

I've come up with a basic tutorial for now. It needs a bit of tweaking, but I'm opening it up to the public domain.

theres a couple of variations. I'll stick em all down if someone will give me a hand organising them.

I worked this out while I was trying to design a small explosion (canvas was 40*40 at the time), it probably needs some work to be made bigger
• set the foreground colour to 128,128,128 grey and the background to 0,0,0 black
• draw a blobby shape in the middle of the drawing area
• duplicate the layer and set the blend mode to screen
• duplicate the layer until the shape appears white on the viewing area
• apply FILTER>DISTORT>OCEAN RIPPLE (9,4) to one of the layers
• [ctrl]+[f} for all other layers.
• FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN BLUE (1.0) to all layers
• create two new layers on top. fill one with 255,255,0 yellow and one with 255,0,0 red
• set the blending modes for both of these to overlay
• tweak the opacity settings on both until the colours look natural (i reckon around 60-70%)
•
If I've posted this in the wrong place, sorry, but like I said I'm new here.
any comments, please?

this is the first time i've seen it. and dont' worry if people ignore your post...they've got lives of their own. i mean if i got mad everytime my posts got over looked, i'd be suicidal by now
well so yea, don't sweat the 'no response' stuff, and it's so late that it's early , thus i haven't tried your tutorial yet. but ...wait it out i guess.

remember, always look on the bright side of life.
some things in life are bad, they can really make you mad...other things just make you swear and curse. But, when you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble - give a whistle! and this'll help things turn out for the best....and, always look on the bright side of life.

Interesting tutorial. I tried it, but I don't think I got the desired result. Could you post a pic of what's it's supposed to look like? Thanks in advance.

I don't get a lot of chance at home to run through it but I will soon. Post whatever you've managed and I'll have a look.

It's supposed to look like a cloudy fiery napalm explosion like you might see in an action movie

Be on the lookout for my ugly mess of an attempt. I'll be linking it up today! In the meantime, if you have a sample of the effect to post. That would be very cool....
