Lighting Effects Keep Screwing Up on Me

Ive been trying for hours to get THIS to work, but the lighting effects keep screwing up, it ends up looking like i embedded a texture into the shape. No apparent lighting effect. Any advice on how to fix the lighting effects??:(

Can anyone tell me why I get this: when I should be getting this: except without the inlayed sphere???
