Yup, it probably can be done in photoshop... however i suggest you look around your house for something with a similar cylinder shape and holes.. To me, the object in the background looks something like the inside of a trash can, or a even a thimble.

Uh, I'm not really good at reproducing people's work... but if I were to do that completely in photoshop, I'd use a half tone pattern and manipulate the shape to the cylindrical shape specified in your link. From then all it be is a lot of blending mode editting.... IMO finding a household similar object and takin a picture of it is much easier :D

I don' know but I think I would do those holes with a pattern you make on a separate layer and then, as Within suggests, do a number of transforms on that layer in order to get the "holesection". I tried for a few minutes and came up with this, using the shear filter and transform/distort...bended grid

open an image, fill it with what color you want. Make a new layer and make a dot with the penciltool in a slightly brighter color, rect marquee it just around, then go edit/define pattern. Then fill the new layer with this "holepattern". Ctrl+alt it and fiddle a li'l with the shear filter and the transform tool 'til you're happy.

I'll bet'ya, there is a numerous ways of doin' this better, but this is what I came up with...

Uh... Halftone pattern, edit>transform>perspective transform, guassain blurring, and some delicate air brush shadows for the 3d effect.
