I am very new to photoshop 6 I need to know how to put a background on a new image please tell me step-by-step

1. You need to be more specific in what you are trying to accomplish for anyone to be able to help you.

2. There are several tutorials on this site on how to do what you are asking. Get started there and then come back and post when/if you run into problems.

If you are talking about just a single color as a background, set your forground color whatever color you want it to be and then press Alt+Del to fill the image.
