how do you do this...

i just wanna know how to do bursts of light like in this picture, just how to make something like this picture... its very difficult but if you could just give me somewhere to start.

Here's my advice:

first, you need a machine that can handle huge files (both in 100s of Layers and in MB)- that, or set it up to process over night. I have a P4 1.5 GHz with a gig of RAM that is too slow for stuff like that.

second, practice like a crazy man - the artists that make those are typically very, very elite (at least they are in my book) - I've found lots of them through books like Photoshop masters, and photoshopuser magazine. Many of them are from high-end British design schools.

third, 3D Studio Max would help (although I'm not sure if it's used in that particular image) I don't have it, but I'd like to learn.
