just a basic question about having transparency in jpg images. i know how to do it for gif images, but the text becomes a bit unattractive.

i want the below picture to be transparent in the white area where the text is, leaving the other half (where the car is) non transparent. you can see i got it right for the 2nd image, but its a gif and the text quality sucks hardcore.

for those that know about how freeservers is a b***, you'll prolly need to copy n paste the image url (dont click it).

There is no such thing as JPEG Transparency. Only PNG and GIF formats support transparency.

so is a png format better quality?

oh, and if you're having trouble with freeservers just go to www.ecomplanet.com and sign up for an account. that's what I use and it's flawless.

PNG is currently not supported by all browsers. So its not advisable to use it online yet. The only two true formats for online use is GIF and JPEG.

Why do you need the white to be transparent? If you're using this for the web and you want the text to be shown over a bgimage or whatever...Why not use html text and a stylesheet to control the display of the text instead of an image...Or am I missing something here?

sorry for the lateness of this reply, forgot i posted something here.

the reason i wanted the area behind the text to be clear is because im using that image as a sig at a message board, which doesnt use white backgrounds. dont matter anymore realy, no matter wat transparency ill use will make the text lose its quality.

and thnx snivlem, ill try out www.ecomplanet.com

You could always match the color of the bg at the message board you're referring to and put it behind the text so it appears transparent...Unless of course it alternates colors like this one does...Then I guess you'd have to make 2 and post a different sig everytime...heh
