Trace or outline of image

I have several jpeg files that I would like to convert into a tracing our outlined appearance. Basically, I want the color out of the image with just an outline or profile of the edges. White background with the tracing or outline in black. Can someone help!

tornupinside (one of our resident gurus) gave an explanation somewhere a while back, but I can't find it. Maybe if he swings through here, he can give you the link to the post where he explained how to manually do it. It's not complicated, but I can't think of the steps off the top of my head right now.
