I would say yes. I kind of liked the - classroom in a book - I used to learn Pagemaker (might be similar to Illustrator). I switched to Illustrator after learning Pagemaker and found the transition pretty easy....
But I found Illustrator is quite different from Photoshop.

PageMaker = Page Layout
Illustrator = Vector Drawing

Different beasts that can do a few things similarly. Smartest thing is to use the proper tool for the job at hand.

I know Illustrator is for vector drawing, but it works (in my opinion for what I do) better at lay out than Pagemaker. I find a lot more flexibility with text, and after a disaster with a font conflict between mac and pc (doesnt happen with illustrator) it is much safer to use. =)
