This is something that just happened when a client of mine sent me an ad in Photoshop 6.0 format. They had applied different colors to their text, but when I opened the file in 5.0, all the colored text had turned to either black or white. The publication went to press with the lost colors and now they are furious...

What I need is either some official documentation that establishes this as a known issue with Photoshop, or for some one in the pre-press industry to step up and say they have encountered this issue before, and can verify that 6.0 versions cannot be trusted to open correctly in 5.0

My saing grace is that the ad specs I sent to them clearly state that only Photoshop 5.0 or less files would be accepted, and that they never indicated the file was made in 6.0. This extra documentation however would be very beneficial when presenting my case to their boss.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer =)

Didn't find any official documents, however I have tried it. It looks like that 6.0 isn't backwards compatible with 5.0 in text handling. Probably because the way 6.0 and 5.0's text management systems are completely different. Thats the best I can do.

Try having them save it from 6.0 as a 5.0 file and then try sending it to you ?? That "may" work...

I feel your pain. I got a pretty lame deal on Friday, this client called, I made a vehicle ad for him, and the phone number was wrong. We almost had to eat the job and reprint it. Sure, I made the typo, due to bad handwriting, but...
my question (and answer) was: What are proofs for?

I'm off the hook.

good luck! - my advice would be to register at adobe.com and search through their forums for your documentation.

Why not even use the newest version of programs anyway? Even though your already good with 5.0 and 6.0 is just too different or tools aren't found there that were in 5.0 why dont you just go ahead and transition yourself into the jones' family (meaning , stop messin with old tonka trucks when the new ones do so much more, really, no mater what you think) photoshop 6.0 is in most or all to me, ways better than 5.0 so why you still messin with 5? 6 works with 6... 5 works with 6... but i wouldn't make my stuff backwards compatiable either.. just get 6.0 :-) your a baller... :-) just havin fun arguing.. i hate when people use older versions of programs that have newer version out already..

Hehe, I'll letcha talk to my boss Sket ;)

Thanks all for the input - to avoid this sort of problem in the future, we've simply removed the photoshop-file format from our accepted artwork list. From now on we will only accept a flattened TIF or EPS, and will stick to our ad deadlines (part of the problem was their ad came in 3 days late and was holding up the publication at the printer).

I am registerd at Adobe.com, and there is nothing I can find to verify that text is not fully backward compatible between the 2 versions... trying to talk to them on the phone is a lot like pulling teeth out with a pair of bunny slippers - you end up with nothing but a mouth full of fuzz =p
