how 2 save

ok when i goto save a pic it is in PS format by default, if i change that to jpg then i get warned that i will lose info because of that format...why cant i just export it into jpg like the more basic grapics progs do?...im obviously missing something obvious here...

File > Save for web
That will give you the option to export as a GIF or JPEG without flattening your image or losing any data from the original PSD file.
