ctl-click your square layer.

make a new layer.

Edit>stroke. set your thickness, etc.

adjust that layer's blend mode to however you like it.

did I understand it right? I'm a lousy reader.

hope that helps

aw crap. told ya I was lousy.

try taking your blend mode to normal, opacity to 100%, then stroke it *trying to keep a straight face* and then adjust blend and opacity after you have the stroke you want

?

Yes, as I mentioned in the page I posted, I completed the project by making a selection and stroking it.

as to your 2nd reply, that's doesn't help, I tried it all.

Alright, I'll take a crack at this one. Instead of applying a stroke to it to form an outline, make one yourself. First, make your semi-transparent grey box on one layer. Then ctrl-click that layer, go to select>modify>expand and input the size that you want your outline to be. Then fill in your outline box on a new layer, ctrl-click the grey transparent box again, and delete that from the outlined box layer.

That what you lookin' for?

Layer styles are funny like that. Transparency plays a role in how they look on a layer. Why? I dunno, ask Adobe.

No MAD68790, you didn't really understand the question. I wanted to know if it was possible USING layer styles. I know how to do it by NOT using layer styles.

Oh my, I should've known you weren't that dumb. I see what you are talking about now. Doesn't look like it's possible to do what you are suggesting.

I'll check later on, but I'd "guess" it's the transparency issue somebody else already said. I'd try doing the stroke before you lower the opacity, then do your technique.
