Ignore the typos, i know i know
Ignore the fact that the color stats links don't work
Ignore that fact that the image has no real defined lightsource. I know, i know.

ok, beyond all that what do you think? This is just basically how i color images, and some people asked me to do a tut on it. Well here it is.

What i'm looking for is for people to let me know if its easy to understand and, better yet, when they do it do they run into any problems.

I plan to redo it, since i don't actually have permission to use the image in question. It was just the last image i colored in and when people started asking for a tut. But before i do that i want to know what i need to improve on.

Great Job DQ. Upload it to the site so I can say I did something new ;)

Critique: I'd say you wrote a fine tut. Maybe a higer zoomed in screen shot for a tip or two (nitpicky, and if I'm nitpicky that means I'm struggling to find things) =) Did you do any tweaking of the black areas in the shirt at all? Looks like no but I couldn't be sure. If you did that could be a quick tip. And you already said not to mention the highlights and stuff so I guess there is not much to nit pick at. Good job...

Its a good tutorial. Though it is a fairly common method of coloring in PS. Lots of tuts resembling this method are out there.

I personally prefer to extract the lines from the white by grabbing them from a channel. That way, you can right-click on the layers behind the black lines, and not have to deal with the invisble white on the lines layer. The results are the same either way.

Good job.

Which ones do you feel its important to have full-size image of it?

I have to redo this tut anyways because the image in question i don't really have permission to use. Just animage i found on the net. It was just used as a quick rough draft so i could get some feedback.

Nope, i just want to focus purely on getting the idea of coloring down. Editing and and touching up images can be something on the end or a side-link.

said not to mention the highlights and stuff

I don't even want to go into that stuff in the tut (psh like i know anything about light sources anyways) I just want to have something to get people to kick-start themselves. They can learn about real color techniques once they have the basics down.

Lots of tuts resembling this method are out there.

While i haven't looked in a while most tuts i see in coloring either are way to stupid and don't cover much or are way to advanced and it takes actual knowledge of coloring to completele. This is just for your average photoshop use who wants to do a little coloring for line art. not for painter trying to use photoshop to do their images.

hmm if anyone actually DOES this tut that would be great, post your result. It will be easier to tell if something is confusing or not.

HAHA!

I really only posted that to float it, I was going to bed it was late and it had fallen in the ranks pretty bad and had "0" replies. So I bumped it.

Now I've had a chance to read it, and it is written very well. Like MrB, I use the method to extract the black lines just to get the transparency. Other than that it is pretty much what I do when coloring lineart.

I did hate the fact some of the links didn't work though... Oh yeah, don't mention that... ok, ok... like I said last night...

Looks good to me.

*chuckles* Thanks.

The links don't work because i didn't create the pages yet. I want to get this part down because i go off and do details about specific things.

I'll put a link to alternative selection method (the channels). this is just the way i do it so i feel more comfortable talking to people about it.
