new guy question????

I don't really know how to ask the question. On the site linked below, they have a graphic on the main page that is on the left hand side. The graphic where the orange in the background curves like a have oval. Can anyone explain how to create a graphic like that.

1. Make a orange layer.
2. Add a new layer above it.
3. Color the top layer the color you want the
menus etc.
4. Use the circle marquee tool along with the Shift and Alt keys to cut out the design you want in the top layer(not the orange)
5. Apply a bevel and emboss layer effect to the top layer.
