As a newbie to photoshop you probably couldn't tell any major difference in the programs when learning to use it. Just remember to look on top near the menu bar for tool opinion and features. Photoshop 6.0 has folder sets, liquify, and extract and styles. if you are gonna get photoshop might as well get 6.0. |

6 is better in many ways; 1 Type — advanced typography, vector type and live editability - absolutely impossible in 5 2 Vector layers and layer "clipping paths" — very useful for previewing the effects of clipping paths and for design purposes. 6 is a much more flexible design tool generally. 3 Improved layer effects — only problem is the huge dialog box in 6, one of my major gripes about the release. 4 layer sets — a huge benefit if you work with massive complex files. I worked (until recently) in a design company where they still had 5 on all the machines — I realised I almost forgot how to use it, but it means that you can still do all the professional stuff in 5, just some of the features above are missing. |

Yeah. I used to work in PS5, then made the switch to 6. I suggest immediate usage of 6 as the layout of PS 5 and 5.5 compared to 6 is different. Its just easier now to start with 6 instead of upgrading later because you'll have to re-learn where some stuff is if you don't.
