UPDATE:

Well, I fixed my problem with the layer styles dialog box being so slow!!!

What did it for me was to remove my Soundblaster Live card. I was having other problems with it (conflicts between it and my VIA chipset on motherboard) so I took it out - and "vwala" the layers styles dialog box comes up almost instantly now!!!

The frustrating thing about this problem is that everybody seems to have a different fix - no constant variable. Oh well, I'm just glad I don't have to wait around anymore.

Thanks for all your input!

i've had a similar problem...except with the radial blur effect, if it doesn't freze on me(which it usually does) the effect on 100%zoom and best resolution takes atleast 5 miutes to finish. I know im only on a p2 with 96 megs of ram, but photoshop4&5 ran fine on my pc

Well i think i could beat you all (time wise).

I run a 1.5 P4, 128mb ram and windows ME

It take at least 30 sec before the layer styles come up, i seem to have come to terms with it by now but i would really like to get rid of it without removing my sound blaster.

Well, you might not necessarily have to remove your sound card. What I found in my case was that it wasn't the sound card (hardware) but a software issue.

Possible solution/ workaround:
With photoshop not running, hit ctrl+alt+delete to view the programs running in the background. If you have something called "Devldr16" running., then select it and "end task" -- Then try running photoshop. If you system is like mine, I went from 8-10 second delays to almost instantanious.

Not sure what this "devldr16" actually does, but it is installed with the soundblaster card. I tried deleting it out of my system folder, so photoshop ran fine, but my Unreal Tournament would crash on boot up. I eventually trashed my soundblaster and got a Turtle Beach-- not only fixed my photoshop problem, but many other problems I was dealing with.

Hope that helps. Let me know if it works for you too. I'd like to know if this a solution that can be replicated.
