I've heard that you can install fonts into Photoshop and Photoshop only. The benefit would be less taxing on application performance since there are significantly less usable fonts in Word for example. There's also a memory limitation on the amount of Windows fonts a PC can use.

I've tried converting a Gilsans typeface from my Mac using Fontographer and processing into a TTF. I wanted the Regular, Bold, BoldItalic, and Extrabold typefaces, but only Regular and BoldItalic will show up in my Photoshop font menu (PC) when I install the fonts in my Windows font folder.

If there is a way to install fonts into Photoshop only, it may solve my problem. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Photoshop 5.5 and 6 on Windows 98/2000 dualboot

Thanks in advance

Fonts are a system-level addition, so you can't add them to just Photoshop.

Sounds like you need to look into a good font management application like AdobeTypeManager Deluxe or Extensis Suitcase. These apps will allow you to activate individual fonts or customised sets of fonts at will, without rebooting your system.

I think you're right, so I tried using ATM to install a GilSans type face after using Fontographer to port out as a postscript font.

My problem now is, I have 4 fonts - Gilsans regular, bold, bold-italic, and italic, but when I try to load them using ATM, it only lists 2 fonts ("Gilsans" and "Gilsans, italics") as the only fonts available. I installed them and opened Photoshop. When I use the type tool and select Gilsans, I see Bold and BoldItalic as the only selections available!

To make things more puzzling, I uninstalled the fonts and erased all the postscript fonts I ported from my Mac except for the regular Gilsans type face. When I open ATM, it will list Gilsans just as it did before. I install, open Photoshop, and there it is!

I simply can't figure out a way to install all 4 type faces using ATM. After 4 hours, the only solution I came up with is installing Gilsans regular and italics as Truetypes using Windows "install fonts" and installing Gilsans bold and bold-italics as postscripts using ATM. I don't have a problem doing this, but I have 800 fonts I'd like to transfer to my PC from my Mac, and Fontographer (Mac) does not appear to have batch processing.

The postscript fonts I'm porting with Fontographer are only 37K. I couldn't get a copy of ATM dlx (PC), so I'm using ATM lite...could that be the problem? Doesn't seem likely.

Using Fontographer to do your conversions seems like overkill, like jumping into your Rolls Royce to drive 40 feet to the mailbox.

You might want to have a look at TransType from Pyrus Labs. It might have the batch processing you need. And at US$97.00, it might be worth spending the money for all the time it would save you.

I'd have to agree that it may be overkill, but since I have access to a copy at work, it beats spending $97. I'll take a look at it though. I don't see how it can solve the problem of displaying all 5 type faces in ATM.

thanks
