File> Save for Web> select ".gif" as your image type make sure the "transparency" check box is checked. set the matte setting to "none" <-- (at first... you might have to make it the color of the background you are putting the image on, IF the image looks to have "ratty" edges.) and save. Photoshop 6 made it REAL easy... as long as you don't have a "background" layer it knows what you want to be transparent. Hmmmm, after rereading your post..... if you want to keep the checkerboard pattern you'll have to recreate it OR just get a screen capture of a blank photoshop document and add it to your image as a new layer.... behind the other layers. The "black and white squares", as you call them, are there to indicate areas that are transparent, which you know. First off, I have to wonder whether your "black and white squares" are really BLACK and white. Never saw anyone change their transparency grid squares from gray and white. This checkerboard, as you have discovered, does not remain with a saved image in any format besides .PSD, because it's hard coded into the background of the document window. It's never a real part of the actual image data, The only way to achieve what I'm guessing you're looking for is to create a layer that you fill with a checkerboard pattern. This layer should then be moved behind all your other layers. When you clear away areas in layers above the checkerboard layer, it will then show through. Either that, or take a screen shot of your document window, and crop out any extraneous window framing, title bar, etc. that you don't want. EDIT: It appears as though I was composing my message as Torn wrote his response. Hope we answered it for ya! |
