I wanted to know how you can create an image similar to this: I thought maybe using the smudge tool, and color dodge, but I couldn't get it working the way I hoped. Anyone care to explain this to me? Thanx |

Use radial blur and then duplicate the layer. Then experiment with layer blending modes, like color dodge and color burn and difference, etc. Then keep doing that and moving the layers around until you get something like that. Or better yet, until you get something original.

That looks to be several filters/effects all put together. Achieving a result similar to that won't be as easy as just using a smudge brush or color dodging. The graphic probably started off as a single rectangle with some dots drawn in it. The layer was probably duplicated, and made darker using the hue/saturation adjustment controls, or the bightness/contrast. This darkened layer was then masked on top of the underlying layer by using a gradient mask. Both layers were then merged and had the motion blur filter applied in the same direction as the length of the rectangle to make it look like a streak. The layer was then duplicated again, the duplicated layer was chromed. Some sort of blending mode was used, maybe overlay or hard-light. The layers were then merged back together. This time the Distort>shear filster was used to bend the rectangle. The bent rectangle was given a black background and masked into it to look like it was coming out of the shadows. Additional highlights appear to have been added on extra layers. The other strands are probably duplicate layers of the original streak layer, but have been modified further and masked in as well. A good as guess as any. |

Ah this technique reminds me of Pank's tubes for some reason... I'll see if I can recreate something like that and tell you if I get it correct |
