selecting mask

How do you select an image when it is masked? With a regular image you hit control and click on the image, but this doesn't work when the image is masked.

Yes it does work - try again.

Make sure you are control clicking on the layer itself and not on the layer mask. Part of the problem is in the words you have used .. 'select an image' isn`t right - you mean select the transparency of a layer. Also you can`t mask a whole 'image', only a layer.

I`ve assumed you are talking about layer masks and not Aplha channels.
