Boxes and Lines on an Image

How do you guys create such boxes and lines on an Image using photoshop as shown in the screenshot below?

One way would be to use selections.

Once you have your selection, you can then use the other PS tools on that area to darken/lighten/colour the area. You can add a stroke to the selection. You can use gradients, transparency and most filters on selections.

It is usually best to copy these selected areas onto there own layer so that you do not damage the underlying image. If you make a mistake, you can always trash it and start again.
