Color replacement tool

Photoshop CS Version 8.0

I'm trying to remove red eye with the color replacement tool but the replacement color shows as grey when I have selected black. I'm using the following settings:

Mode: Color
Sampling: Once
Limits: Discontiguous
Tolerance: 30%

How do I fix this?

Do it by Hand, using the paint brush, with the color selected to match the eye color. Add a catch light with 2-3px white spot in the middle.

Otherwise get CS2 with Red Eye removal tool.
