that turpentine site... claiming to have a tut on grungin' it up evidentally doesn't. well it does...but it's instructions are vague, and tend to not conjuntion independent clauses. for example, he says something like i displace mapped some picture alot and i got this. so i said hrm...maybe it's a no brainer, i can just displace map it. but nooo... no matter what i did, it didn't come out to look ANYTHING like what he came out with. and the more "hands on" area of the tut is just a link to his portfolio. i tried google search, but there are like only 3 search results. but i found one i was looking for, for future reference, go to www.stridingstudio.com they got 2 good grunge tut's. |

I found his tutorial to be quite informative. No, it was not a step by step "Click this button, use this setting, now click this button". But that defeats the entire purpose of grunge. It's supposed to be random and ugly. You can't really write a tutorial like that. Well I guess you can, but it would all come out looking the same. It's more of an advanced tutorial on technique, not on how to use the displacemap filter. And that's the way I personally think tutorials should be. With the exception of some of the most basic ones.

Ok Amen. I am going to suggest something revolutionary. It is so revolutionary that it astounds even me. That tutorial, the one that is 'vague' is that way for a reason. The reason is because he doesn't want you to follow a fixed set of steps. There is this new thing on the internet these days called experimentation. Read through the tutorial again. Then experiment. |
