Hel Help Im Drowning In My Own Frustration!

Ok so I am trying to make a planet useing a photoshop tutorial and everything is straightforward and easy, but then it asks me to use the Layer Styles menu which is not clickable when i go under layers. Having taken two years of Graphics classes this simple problem is making me literally rip my hair out in frustration, here is the tutorial if you were wondering what i am trying to do. fellow photoshopers I need your advice! (i am useing Photoshop 4.0 Elements)

Try double-clicking the layer you want to apply layer styles to. That *should* take you to the layer styles window.

[edit: ooo wait, you're using Photoshop Elements? I was thinking straight-up Photoshop.. dunno if it works in Elements, I've never used that particular app.]

Photoshop Elements? Most tuts use Photoshop CS etc...Elements....I'm not sure if it would work there. But on PS CS etc.. you access the layer styles menu by clicking in the left most icon i nthe layers dialog or by double-clicking the layer you want to.
