problem with colour in photoshop?

Hi i am trying to do a layout in ps cs2 and i pick the colour pink /or red eg, and when it fills it the box is grey? so is the swatch which shows my backgroend and foreground colours! any ideas what is wrong? thanks for your help Donnasx sorry im quite new to this!

Check the image colour mode (Image > Mode) to make sure you're not working in Grayscale, which could account for your colour problems. If you are, change to RGB or CMYK.
