Hello, i want to resize an image, i want to only change the witdth and not the lengh. I am using photoshop 7. When i go to "image size" and i type in the size of the width i want the image to be, photoshop automatically resizes the width and the length for me. Is there a way to resize an image that can allow you to change the witdth and not the length? |

You can change the width only by first un-checking the 'constrain proportions' check box in the 'Image Size' dialog. Be aware that if you do this the image will distort (squash or stretch depending on the size you enter) If you want to alter the width (or the height) without distorting the image, you could try using the crop tool. |

thanks for the first tip wano. how do i use the crop tool. I used the croped tool around the image and i slided the left side of the image and moved it inwards assuming it would make the width of the picture narrow, but all it did was make it dark and bright, one part of image looked like a brightness the other part looked like a shadow or darkness. How do i resize an image only changing the width of an image not the height USING Crop Tool? |

Click in the image and drag a rectangle to the size you want to crop your image to. The 'bright' area you refer to is the part of the image that will be left after Photoshop crops the image. The 'shadow' area is the part of the image that will be cropped away. When the rectangle is to your liking, hit Enter to crop. To use the crop tool to change the width but not the height:- (Before you start, and until you're more familiar with using the crop tool, I suggest you work on a copy of your image. That way, if you have a disaster, all is not lost! To copy your image, go Image > Duplicate) Select the crop tool In the 'tool options' bar near the top of the screen, click on the 'clear' button to clear out any crop size pre-sets there may be. Position the cursor at the top-left of the image and drag down and to the right. Keep dragging until you go past the bottom of the image. You'll see a rectangle of 'marching ants'. Let go the mouse button when the rectangle is the full height of the image. You will now have a 'bright' area with 'marching ants' around it, which is your crop area. You can now adjust the size of the crop to your liking. Look at the rectangle you have just created. At each corner and in the middle of each side, there is a small square. These are 'handles'. By dragging on these you can alter the dimensions of the crop rectangle. Push the handles in to make the crop smaller, and out to make it bigger. Also, you can re-position the rectangle by positioning the cursor inside the rectangle and dragging. When you are happy with the size and position of your crop rectangle, hit Enter to accept the crop. Hope this helps |

wano. I tried the crop instructions, but all crop did was cut a part of the picture, i don't want any part of the picture deleted, i want all of the picture included. All i want to do is resize the width of the image and not the height? The first suggestion you offered work great (un-checking the 'constrain proportions' , unless there is something i am not getting right with the crop tool because all it did for me was cut the outer part of the image. |

The only way you can do this without cropping the image is by un-checking constrain proportions, in which case you'll get a distorted image |

You need to get whatever you want to enlarge onto its own layer. In the case of text, it will be created on its own layer as you type it. In the case of people from the image, you will need to cut them out and isolate them onto a new layer. (Select the figures using any method you feel most comfortable with, then hit CTRL + J) Once on its own layer, the text or figures can be enlarged by entering Free Transform (Either go Edit > Free Transform, or hit CTRL + T) Then drag the handles of the bounding box until you're happy with the size. Hit Enter to accept the transformation |
