Images Opening Dark - Help Needed

I am finding that all images I am opening are opening up very dark. I have tried in cs, cs2 and cs3 but all with the same result. Doesn't really matter which color settings I use the images are far too dark when opened.

This does not happen when using other applications and everything opens fine when using those other programs. Running Adobe Gamma doesn't help
as it effects everything - not only PS.

It only happens in Photoshop - so I am guessing that something, somewhere deep in the Photoshop files needs to be changed. Could it be something in the /common files/adobe folder?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

try reset preferences for starters.
