Remove Chrome Appearance

i would like to powder coat a majority of the chrome plated items on my vehicle, however prior to doing so, i'd like to get an idea of what it will look like. i've seen it done before, but i don't know exactly how to do it in photoshop. if anyone has advice, tutorial, and etc. that will remove the chrome from a photo, your help is greatly appreciated. thanks!

ctrl click on the rgb in channels and copy to a new layer. Get a brush use whichever clolor you are going to use. What you just did was select the highlights. Chrome reflects light.
