I am running PS 6.0 on a new work machine, and I can't get my elliptical selections to give me a nice anti-aliased effect when i use the paintbucket tool to fill the selection. I have the anti-aliasing checked. It's the first time this has happened to me - does anyone know if it's a hidden pref?

For selections you get this effect by feathering, which is in the options bar when you make your selection. the larger your document is, the more pixels needed. If you forgot, but you saved the selection, you can feather it from the menu bar under 'select'.

Feathering can help smooth edges a little bit, but I'd guess that's not the solution called for in this case.

First of all, make sure you're viewing your image at 100% magnification. 50% can work as well, but generally, odd magnification settings can produce what appear to be jagged edges when they are, in fact, as smooth as it would be possible to get them.

Not only should you have the "Anti-aliased" box checked in the Options Bar when you make your selection with the Elliptical Marquee Tool, but you should have it checked for the Paint Bucket Tool as well. Another thing you need to look at is the Tolerance setting. The default setting for this is 32, and is usually a good place to start, and should be appropriate for most uses.
