Hi... I have a problem I can't seem to work out... I need to use and .eps and a transparent .gif file interchangeably in a page layout application (Framemaker, but have had the same issue in Quark XPress)... I've rasterized my Illustrator .eps in Photoshop to a transparent .gif, yet when I place both the .gif and the .eps into independent picture boxes, they show up as different sizes (the .eps is bigger). Printing is consistent with the screen view. Anyone have any ideas as to what I'm missing?!? Thanks!!!! |

Hi, sorry, I do not know the solution for your problem, just wanted to say I really need to know it, too. For my case, I use CAD eps file and combine into other graphics. For right now, I make an reference line on CAD and on Image so when I import into image @photoshop, I just tried to mach both of the reference line to match. It seems work out ok somewhat. However, I'd love to know if there is much better way!!!! |

Must be a common thing to do lately. I'm putting CAD maps for a local county online, and I had him export them as .eps, and then I changed them to .gifs in Photoshop, since he didn't have the option on CAD. But I guess I didn't have do use them simultaneously, so I didn't have a problem with size.

I really think the mistake you are making is using a .gif in a page layout. .gif files are simply NOT print graphics. They don't have the bit depth needed for a quality reproduction especailly if it is a color reproduction. I suggest if you are going to rasterize the file.... make it a .tif file... but what I don't understand is: Why not use the .eps exclusively? Why rasterize it...if it was created vector? |

My application is one that's a bit unique... My employer has a system that allows is customers to change/edit documents online using DHTML - graphics can be viewed/uploaded/changed as well... hence the need for the GIF. And GIF in particular, because we need transparency in the image. Text and image file names are saved in XML then poured into a template created by a page layout app (Framemaker) - ultimately composed into both a Postscript and a PDF file (requiring .eps and .pdf versions of the graphics, respectively). The image starts out as an .eps, created in Adobe Illustrator 9. I've tried Saving for Web in Photoshop, straight export in Pshop, Save for Web in Illustrator, Save as PDF in both Pshop and AI. Am at rope's end... Thanks for the input, though! |

OK, thats a little clearer... I did a little research and have decided...I'm not sure where you are going wrong. I opened photoshop and went file>open> and selected an .eps file I created.... deminsions = 2.764" (w) x 6.111" (h)... it ask me what size and resolution I want to rasterize the image into. If I tell it I want the same size (unchanged) with 72 DPI as its resolution the .gif does retain the same onscreen size and print size of the original .eps file. (from Quark, Pagemaker and In-Design) That stands to reason becuase the .eps preveiw is generally a 72 DPI pict/tiff/jpg....whatever further: If I do that same thing and rasterize the file at the same size but 300 DPI resolution I get a .gif file of 11.514" (w) x 25.458" (h) both of these results came from the >file>save for web> option in photoshop 6 so are you rasterizing it to "LESS" that 72 DPI? have you opened the files in PHototshop and veiwed the rulers or >image>image size..... to confirm they ARE the same size? If this floats long enough maybe Utopian23 will chime in and give you something further... thats about all I have... for now... ;) |

Well, here's the rub... If you are so-enabled... open up a Quark XPress page, make a picture box, and import the .eps in the box. Duplicate the same box and import the .gif. Watch the .eps grow, faster than on-screen Sea Monkey. Aargh. |
