Hi, I have a digital photography business and just starting out. I have seen some photography sites that do some photoshop "eyes enhancement" to make photographs...pop.....and I am wondering how they do it and what methods they use. They seem to make the childrens eyes iris' look crystal clear and enhance them. Here is an example of a site I know that does it: http://www.dawnm.com click on the "inquires" link. See the picture of the kid? No way his eyes are really like this. She must photoshop a bunch of her pictures to make them pop. If you could direct me to a site that teaches how to do this or something similar that would be great. Thanks a lot! |

They mostly use (advanced) sharpening techniques for eyes. Also they whiten the eyes, that is what makes eyes pop. |

that kid with the two bottom teeth is a bit creepy. and what he said, bringing up the white and airbrushing out any non-white areas will make a big difference. and just post once next time |

You could have asked me directly! :-) I found this post in my webstats and thought I'd help you out. The particular image you mentioned and the majority of my portraits have no eye enhancement. If I ever do anything to the eyes it's when there is harsh shadowing in the eye sockets. Then, I will do a little dodging and burning to make the eye look less in the shadows. The key to sparkly detailed eyes is lighting. Learn how to use natural light so that the eye absorbs the light. Two great resources for me where Professional Secrets of Natural Light Portrait Photography by Box and How to Photography Your Baby by Kelsh. I always make sure there is a catch light in the eye and mainly shoot in open shade to do so. The other thing is to make sure the eyes are in focus and properly exposed. And lastly use a camera and lens capable of capturing the detail. I use a Canon 5D and L lenses. |

Derek, it looks like the Paypal Fee Calculator in your signature is another option for learning how to sharpen photos.... LOL!

Do you use studio lightning equipment? Or reflection screens? It sure looks like that. |

Just natural light. No reflectors or otherwise. I keep it simple. If I shoot indoors I position myself with a window behind me. If I shoot outdoors I do so in open shade. |
