Shapes linking :(

ok heres whats going on. i want to create about 3 shapes in the SAME layer so when i add effects to them they link perfectly ( it used to do this automatically) but now everytime i create a shape it forms a new layer and it wont link with the other shapes it just sits on top.
any help? cheers

You could

1) just merge down or link & merge the shape layers.

2) Select the shape tool, in the options bar make sure "create filled region" is selected. That will keep your shapes in the same layer. "Create work path" will just add your shapes to a path and "Create shape layer" will add a masked fill layer for every shape. If that happens then again, merge those layers.

Hold the Shift key as you draw the SECOND shape and it will be retained in the same Shape Layer.

Also equivalent to the 'Add to Shape Area (+)' Options Bar modifier command option whenever the 'Shape,Path Selection or Marque Tools' are active.
