I've just started using Adobe photoshop CS, and the computer keeps telling me that the scratch disks are full. I tried to change the scratch disks but that only made more problems! The brush's diameter doesn't change anymore, it always stays the same, and the size it's stuck on is the smallest size. When ever I try to paint or do anything the whole program get's stuck and doesn't respond anymore. I don't know why this happens because it was working perfectly fine before it started to give me those messages about full scratch disks. Can anyone help..

Go to the disks that you use (d) as scratch , while photoshop is closed, and delete all the ~pst(numbers).tmp files.

How many gigas do you have free on each disks?

Check that you have not caps lock on: it switches to the presice cursor.

Deleting your preferences might be needed if the cursor is always small. How did you try to change its size?

I don't know how to delete the ~pst(numbers).tmp files, because I don't really know where they are. The reason I don't know is I went to the preferences option to change the scratch disk, and the first scratch disk was on something called start up, it was niether on drive (C) or (D). I don't really know that much about computers but the only start up I know is the start menu of windows, so I don't really know what scratch disk it was using. As for the diameter of the brush, I only tried to change it normally by pushing the button along the bar that changes the diameter in the brush's menu. finally I have a lot of free space on both drives, I've just gotten my laptop so I don't have a lot stored on it yet. I hope this is of any help. thank you

Hit Windows key+F to search files on your hard drive. search for *.tmp to see all temp files.
You may need to go in more options to show hidden files and folders.

Startup is the C drive, where windows is installed. The temp files can be in windows/temp or even in your profile, as hidden files.

You may see the scratch disk is full message if you try to crop an image using the wrong units: 1200 inches at 300 dpi can make a huge image, when you want only 1200 pixels...

I searched the computer for the temporary files and it only found two, which I don't think have anything to do with adobe. I also looked for the temp file in windows and it only contained these files: temporary internet files, history, cookies, and some documents that belong to something called security catalog that come with information on notepads. I don't know where else to look for the adobe temp files. I haven't used adobe for very long, I only made two wallpapers then the scratch disks were full. How can I know which temp fles belong to adobe? Thank you for your patience.

They usually start with ~pst. look into: C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Local Settings\temp.

In the search window, did you go to the advanced options, anssearch for hidd"en files?

I did advanced search like you said, and the computer found a lot of files that start with something like this ~DF94A5.tmp. This is one example, they all start with ~DF but then the numbers and letters that come after that change. All of these files are in C:\Documents and settings\[my user name]\Local settings\temp, the same place you mentioned. I'm only not sure wether these files belong to adobe or not. There is also another bunch of files that are located in the same place and start with TFR59.tmp, the numbers after the R also change in the other similar files. Do these also belong to the adobe temp files? Thank you for your help.

Usually, the first letters of those files have a relation with the name of the app that created them.

Does those files take a lot of room on your disks? How much free space is there? Do you have other disks?

If you have a lot of free space, check the units and the size of the images that you are using.

Have you tried deleting your preferences, as suggested?

I'm really sorry for the late reply, I had a problem with the computer because of a very very bad spyware that just refused to remove it's toolbars that it stuck all over the place! Not just that it also ruined my windows, So unfortunately I had to format my computer. Ofcourse you know that adobe is working now after I reinstalled it, because the scratch disks are ofcourse empty. Thank you however, so much for your support, if the scratch disks are ever full again I'll know how to empty them (I hope!). Finally sorry for being such an annoying nuisance. ;)

Glad that you finally fixed your problem. And remember, the only bad question is the one not asked, this thread maybe helped other members.

Somebody with an avatar that gives flowers can't be a nuisance. ;) Have a great day!
