The highest resolution possible, although you might want to mess around with differences if your scanner favors one over the rest.
The highest resolution possible, although you might want to mess around with differences if your scanner favors one over the rest.
You don't want to scan at the highest possible res at all. Why create a massive file if the output size may only be 3" x 3" at 300dpi? What you want to do is, based on your output resolution (lets say 300dpi), is to scan accordingly in multiples of the original size. If your scanned image is originally 4" x 5" @ 300dpi, to achieve these sizes, do the following. To get 2" x 2.5": Scan at 150dpi, resize in PS (uncheck Resample Image) to 300dpi. This would effectivly take your original photo and cut it in half, since you want half the size. To get 8" x 10": Scan at 600dpi, resize etc... To get 16" x 20": Scan at 1200dpi, etc... To be safe, add another 100dpi or so to give you a bit of playing room, but the idea with scanning is to scan as efficiently as possible. Some very simple math should give you the approximate idea of what resolution to use, based on your original image and its output size. |
