color change on vehicle

im trying to change a vehicles color from red to hunter green, navy blue, yellow, etc. ive tried everything in the book and keep getting a bright green and cant seem to get it darker without darkening the whole image (white fade turns to dark fade). heres a clip > http://s89495246.onlinehome.us/sxc/autored.jpg
anyone know a good process for changing the color? it cant be bright, yet i still need to keep the shadows and highlights the same. ive tried hues, color overlays with differnet combinations of blends...just not working.

Create an adjustment layer and used Selective Color. In the red color drop the magnetta and up the black for a hunter green. You can experiment in there for other colors.
